Our program is modeled on the knowledge that music is not only one of the oldest of the liberal arts but is also a living art informed by the culture of its time. Through a comprehensive program of performance, composition, improvisation, music historical and theoretical studies, coupled with work in a broad spectrum of courses in other disciplines, students emerge with a solid foundation in technique and an artistic vision developed through close reading, listening and performing in a variety of contexts.
Our music faculty is one of the strongest in the Northwest. Creativity is modeled by each of our faculty members through performance and composition at the highest professional level. Such experience is generously passed along to each student through individual lessons or tutorials in voice, instrument or composition.
Performance opportunities abound, from solo performances to chamber music and jazz groups to our larger student ensembles including Chamber Choir, University Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Collective, Willamette Singers, and Dramatic Vocal Arts Ensemble.
