Free Family Activity Day Explores Colorful Turkish Textiles

Saturday, October 13
Noon to 4 p.m.
Hallie Ford Museum of Art

Families are invited to participate in an afternoon of art-making activities, weaving demonstrations and storytelling inspired by the colorful textiles in the exhibition, Family Holdings: Turkish Flat Weaves from the Keith Achepohl Collection. This free event will be held at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art on Saturday, Oct. 13, between noon and 4 p.m.

Salem artist Sonia Allen will teach children how to create their own handwoven textiles. Wanda Jenkins, weaver and spinner from Scotts Mills, will demonstrate and provide an opportunity for visitors to try their hand at spinning with a Turkish drop spindle. An antique spindle and a sample of sheep fleece from Turkey will also be available to view. Portland weaver Pam Patrie will have three looms set up to practice the weaving techniques that can be found in the exhibit. At 1 p.m. and at 3 p.m., performing artist and storyteller-in-residence for the Salem Art Association, Yvonne Young, will delight all ages with Turkish folk tales.

The Exhibition
Family Holdings: Turkish Flat Weaves from the Keith Achepohl Collection
features 46 Turkish flat weaves from one of the finest private collections in the United States. The exhibition includes superb examples of 19th and 20th century rugs (kilims), saddle bags, storage bags and dowry pieces that were made by the nomadic people of Turkey. For centuries these nomadic herders lived in black goat-hair tents and traveled with their sheep and goats from winter to summer pastures. The bold geometric symbols in their textiles reflected the hopes, fears, dreams and aspirations of the weavers who made them, ranging from a happy marriage and many children to protection from the evil eye. Photographs and nomadic Turkish music provide an additional opportunity for people to experience the lives of these remarkable people. This exhibition will continue until December 23.

Family Holdings: Turkish Flat Weaves from the Keith Achepohl Collection has been organized by Director John Olbrantz and collector Keith Achepohl. Support has been provided in part by grants from the City of Salem’s Transient Occupancy Tax funds and the Oregon Arts Commission.
