Bearcats Fall to University of Oregon Club, 7-2, in Exhibition Match
SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's tennis team lost an exhibition match to the University of Oregon Club, 7-2, on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Courthouse Tennis Center.
The U of O Club team won the #1 singles match as Alicia Ly defeated Sabrina Gutierrez (Jr., Newbury park, CA/Folsom HS) 6-3, 6-0.
Rachel Heringer (Fr., Salem, OR/South Salem HS) put Willamette in the win column with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against U of O Club's Taylor Oyama at #2 singles. Mandy Carlson (Fr., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly HS) also won for the Bearcats, defeating Hayley Standage 6-3 and 6-4 at #6 singles.
In the top doubles match, Standage and Oyama from the U of O Club defeated Heringer and Stephanie Matsuura (Fr., Hilo, HI/Waiakea HS) of Willamette 8-3. The U of O Club team also earned victories in the #2 and #3 doubles matches, defeating Willamette 8-1 in both.
Willamette will compete in its first official match of the season on Saturday, February 9 at 3 p.m. (PST) in Walla Walla, Wash., against the University of California-Santa Cruz.
The Bearcats will remain in Walla Walla overnight, beginning conference play on Sunday, February 10 against Whitman College. That match is set to begin at 9 a.m. (PST).
