SALEM, ORE. -- Five Willamette University student-athletes will be honored during the Phi Beta Kappa induction ceremony on Saturday, May 10 at the Cat Cavern in the Putnam University Center. The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (PDT).

Women's basketball player Rebecca Josephson (Sr., G, Fair Oaks, CA/Del Campo HS) was inducted as a junior in 2013.

Seniors who will be inducted this weekend are women's track and field athlete Bekah Daniel (Jr. elig, Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap HS), men's golf and former cross country and track and field athlete Josh Echols (Olympia, WA/Capital HS) and women's volleyball player Shannon Waltz (MH, Honolulu, HI/La Pietra School for Girls).

Molly Bond (Clarkston, WA/Asotin HS), a junior on the women's track and field team, also will be inducted on Saturday.

"As the president of Phi Beta Kappa at Willamette, I am especially proud of this important academic recognition for our five student-athletes," Director of Athletics David Rigsby said. "While each has made a significant contribution to their sports, they've made an even greater impact in the classroom. As only 1% of graduating seniors nationwide are elected to Phi Beta Kappa, these students have clearly established themselves among the elite undergraduate students in the country."

Willamette's Phi Beta Kappa chapter was chartered in 1997. Only the top 10% of four-year colleges and universities throughout the nation have been granted chapters in Phi Beta Kappa.

Students must meet several criteria in order to be selected for induction. At Willamette, the top two percent of each junior class and the top 10% of each senior class are selected.

Potential inductees typically have a minimum 3.75 cumulative grade point average as a senior or a minimum 3.90 cumulative GPA as a junior. In addition, scholarly achievement, good character and broad cultural interests are important factors in the selection process.
