MUSC 343 (TH) Music History II (1)

Romantic, Modern and Contemporary Concert Music. Beginning with nineteenth-century music post-Beethoven, including symphony and opera, leading to the birth of modernism and the breakdown of tonality. Examination of musical modernism in the twentieth-century including atonal, twelve-tone and serial music. Post-modern and contemporary musical developments in Europe and America including minimalism and spectralism. Lectures and presentations supplemented by score study, critical listening, readings in contemporaneous literature, criticism and cultural history.
