New Music at Willamette

Neron Kaisar

Hudson Concert Hall | Willamette University

The spring 2013 new music concert featured excerpts from a new work by composer-in-residence John Peel. Scenes from the opera-in-progress, “NERON KAISAR,” were presented in a concert version for voices with piano accompaniment.

The singers included one of our voice faculty members, tenor Les Green in the title role of Nero, with supporting roles by soprano Janice Johnson as Poppaea and mezzo-soprano Angela Niederloh as Octavia. Willamette University alumna Janet Coleman ’90 accompanied
the singers.

The libretto, a mixture of English, Latin and Greek, was written by professor Mark Usher, chairman of the department of classics at the University of Vermont. The sung texts are drawn from episodes in Suetonius’ The Twelve Caesars and from classical Greek and Latin poetry.
