Philosophy

Program(s) Offered: Major, Minor

The breadth and generality of philosophy’s concerns set it apart from other disciplines, while its approach — combining careful argument with insight and imagination — makes it applicable to problems in any field of study or endeavor.

The members of our faculty are experts in a wide range of areas, including political philosophy, aesthetics, existentialism, epistemology, the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of language, logic, Buddhist philosophy and philosophical approaches  to gender and race. This broad range is reflected in our curriculum, which offers students the opportunity to learn about a variety of philosophical approaches and traditions.

We encourage the systematic investigation of our most deeply held beliefs, whatever they concern, and in this way come to understand them more fully. This intensive practice sharpens our perception of the relationships among the various other fields of study and deepens our understanding of human experience. In short, philosophy lies at the core of the liberal arts, and our students graduate with an education possessing both breadth and depth.
