Faculty Resource Committee

The Faculty Resource Committee (FRC) reviews applications and makes recommendations to the Faculty Council for the Junior Faculty Research Leave Program, the Sabbatical Program, and the Faculty Study Time Program.  The  FRC also reviews applications and awards funds for Conference Travel Expenses and Atkinson Research Expense Grants.


Faculty Conference Travel Expense Requests

Faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts are eligible to apply for travel funds to present at professional meetings (up to $1600 for domestic meetings and $2000 for international meetings).

Application Materials

All applications for conference travel must be submitted through the Grant/Travel Application link on the faculty member's JASON page, or the Willamette Internal Funding Database.

Deadlines

  • October 1, 2013 - For requests for conference travel completed before June 1 (CLOSED)
  • December 1, 2013 - For requests for conference travel completed before June 1 (CLOSED)
  • April 1, 2014 - Requests for funding for conferences taking place after June 1 (CLOSED)

Atkinson Research Expense Program

The Atkinson Research Support Program supports and encourages scholarship and continuing professional development for full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty. Through this program Willamette University affirms that research, artistic activity, and other forms of continuing professional development are essential for sustaining the role and vitality of the University. Commensurate with the University's emphasis on high academic quality, the program provides funding for expenses related to scholarly endeavors selected through a competitive review process. Awards are $2,500 every two years (max).

Application Materials

The Faculty Resource Committee invites requests for research support. Proposals are due by 5:00 pm on October 1 for support for the current academic year, and April 1 for support in the upcoming fiscal year that starts June 1. Applications should be submitted on the appropriate web form on the faculty member's JASON site. The committee expects to make its recommendations to the CLA Dean approximately four weeks after the deadline. Final reports are due no later than May 31 of the fiscal year that funds were used.

  • October 1, 2013 - 5 p.m. - Deadline is for work to be completed by May 31 (CLOSED)
  • April 1, 2014 - 5 p.m. - Deadline for work starting June 1 (CLOSED)

Junior Faculty Research Leave Program

This program is designed to facilitate outstanding scholarship by faculty members early in their career and to provide them with a semester without responsibility for teaching and service. Junior Faculty Research Leaves may involve but is not limited to critical writing, artistic performance, creative work, laboratory research, or imaginative writing. Faculty in their second and third year in the tenure process may apply for a leave to be held the following year. The duration of a research leave extends is one semester at full pay.

Eligibility, Guidelines and Evaluation Material

This is a highly competitive program designed for faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor who can demonstrate their potential for outstanding scholarship. In addition, an eligible faculty member must have established a solid record of effective teaching. Faculty in their second and third year in the tenure process may apply for a leave to be held the following year. A Junior Faculty Research Leave extends for one semester at full pay without responsibility for teaching and service.

Faculty Study Time Program

This program provides individual faculty members with time to complete a major, long-term scholarly or creative project intended for peer review in the form of publication, public performance, or exhibition. Full-time, tenure track faculty with two or more years of full-time teaching may apply. Successful applicants will be released from a single course for one semester only.

Sabbatical Leave Program

Sabbatical leaves are granted to encourage professional growth and intellectual enrichment,particularly as these qualities contribute to teaching effectiveness. Sabbatical activities may involve but are not limited to, artistic performance, creative work, critical writing, development of new approaches to teaching, or laboratory research.
