Choral ensembles present winter concert

The three premiere choral ensembles from Willamette University will perform a concert Sunday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in Hudson Hall in the Rogers Music Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

Willamette's Chamber Choir, Male Ensemble and Voce Femminile, under the batons of Wallace Long, Paul Klemme and Christine Welch Elder, will sing. They will be joined by a special guest, the Bel Canto Choir from Baker High School, led by DeeAnn Sands.

The performance will include an eclectic array of music, much by contemporary composers. The Chamber Choir will perform "Cloudburst," by the prolific Eric Whitacre, which aurally simulates a thunderstorm. This powerful piece received first prize in the 1993 American Choral Directors Association "Composers of the Future" competition.

From another young composer, Ethan Sperry, "Desh" is influenced by the classical music tradition of Indian raga. Steven Schwartz, known for his Broadway compositions (Godspell, Wicked), is also represented on the program with "Keramos," a piece about the passage of time laced with complex rhythms and a soaring melody.
