Three Willamette Alumni Honored among Forty Under 40

The Portland Business Journal will honor three young Willamette alumni this month as part of the annual Forty Under 40 awards.

Brian Newman '94, Liani Jean Heh Reeves '98, JD'01, and Vanessa Sturgeon MBA'03 are among the high-caliber executives younger than 40 who will be recognized for character and achievement in their careers, engagement in civic activities, volunteerism in the community and genuine passion for what they do.

Newman is director of Campus Planning and Development at Oregon Health & Science University. He majored in politics at Willamette and went on to earn a master's in city and regional planning at University of California, Berkeley.

He has worked for about 15 years in local and regional planning, both as a practitioner and a public policymaker. He has served on the city council in Milwaukie, Ore., and the Metro Council in Portland, where he focused on green development practices and strategies to fund infrastructure in communities recently brought within the urban growth boundary.

Reeves is assistant to the chief trial counsel in the Employment Litigation Section of the Oregon Attorney General's Office. She also chairs the Oregon Commission on Asian Affairs and serves on the board of the Oregon Minority Lawyers Association.

Reeves majored in religious studies and English before going on to earn her law degree from Willamette. She previously worked as a clinical instructor and staff attorney for the National Crime Victim Law Institute, where she focused on violence against women and human trafficking issues and worked on high-profile victims' rights cases.

Sturgeon is president of TMT Development Company Inc., a Northwest property development and management organization that focuses on office towers and retail shopping centers. The company's properties include Fox Tower and the Broadway Building in Portland.

The awards will be given out Feb. 18 at a reception in Portland, sponsored by Willamette University's MBA programs. Learn more on the Portland Business Journal website.
