Chronicle of Higher Education highlights Willamette football coach

The Chronicle of Higher Education recently highlighted Willamette University football coach Mark Speckman's inspirational legacy and successful career — both on the field and on the speaking circuit.

Speckman, who was born without hands, has "spent a career defying the odds," and now shares motivational words with a wide variety of audiences around the globe, according to the article.

He is entering his 13th season as head coach, and has led the Bearcats to a 19-3 cumulative record over the last two seasons.

His talks focus on overcoming hardship. "We can do more than we think we can," Speckman says in the article. "We all have gifts." He also has a published memoir, titled Figure It Out: How I Learned to Live in a Digital World Without Digits, available through the Willamette bookstore.

Speckman will lead the Bearcats to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for the season opener on Sept. 4, and the team will return to Willamette Sept. 18 for the home opener versus Southern Oregon University at McCulloch Stadium.
