Willamette Dance Company presents spring concerts April 19 and 21

At Willamette, you don’t have to be an experienced dancer to perform in front of an audience of 400 people — all you have to do is try out for Willamette Dance Company.

On April 19 and 21 more than 100 students of all levels of experience will take the stage at WDC’s two spring concerts.

Beginning at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively, the concerts will take place in Smith Auditorium. The free performances will feature almost 20 dances from a wide array of styles — including hip hop, salsa, jazz, tap and contemporary dance.

“We have people who have been dancing since they were kids dancing with people who have never tried it before,” says Bronte Dod ’15, WDC’s program director.

“Dance Company is a great opportunity to try something new, and just have fun and show your love for dance.”

Since 2009, WDC has lived up to its motto: “Student choreographed. Student performed. Student produced.”

An executive board of six students begins scheduling, writing budgets and communicating with dancers and choreographers at the beginning of the semester. Dancers are then cast into specific dances through auditions and a mutual selection process.

Though college students are busy and WDC is a significant time commitment, Dod says the dedication of students makes the performances possible.

“Every student involved in Dance Company — from the executive board to the choreographers to the dancers — works really hard to put together the show,” she says.

“That's what I love about Dance Company. It really is a team effort.”
