WU student learns administration skills through El Pomar Fellowship
Hannah Staller ’14 discovered her passion for community service while attending Willamette University. Now she’s learning other ways to help nonprofit groups through the El Pomar Fellowship Program in Colorado Springs, Colo.
“It was intense,” says Staller about the interview process, where 10 winners were chosen from 100 finalists.
“The foundation does a lot of work to empower community leaders. I’m excited to observe how these leaders take initiative and really work to get things going.”
Through the fellowship program, Staller will receive hands-on experience in nonprofit administration for two years. Her training will feature everything from marketing and development to management and leadership. She starts work on July 7.
Staller says she’s eager to experience all the program has to offer, which will prepare her for a career in civic or community engagement.
“I can see myself educating community leaders, working with nonprofits to provide direct services and making greater social changes through policy,” says Staller, an English major who hails from Centennial, Colo.
“El Pomar gives a broad range of experiences and invests in its fellowship program to hone in on the fellows’ interests and strengths. I know this is where I want to be.”
During her time at Willamette, Staller served as a coordinator in the Office of Community Service Learning — where she helped plan service activities for students on campus. She also interned for the El Pomar Foundation in 2013 and tutored students at Chemawa Indian School and through Oregon College Mentors.
“I’m very grateful for the service learning I received at Willamette because it led me to El Pomar,” Staller says. “My experiences have challenged me to think critically about the role I want to take in making our community a better place.”
