The Collegian sweeps newspaper contest with 21 student awards

From writing to design, the Collegian was recently honored with 21 student awards from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.

“With no formal journalism program offered at Willamette, this is a remarkable achievement on behalf of the Collegian staff members,” says editor in chief Miles Sari ’14 about the 2014 Collegiate Contest.

“This is the most awards the Collegian has won in the annual contest, nearly tripling the previous record of eight awards received in the 2000 and 2008 contests.”

Top awards include first place for Best Special Section, Best Editorial, Best Writing, Best Sports Story, Best Columnist, Best Review, Best Headline Writing and Best Cartooning.

The Collegian competed against several other non-daily newspapers from four-year colleges and universities, including The Siskiyou at Southern Oregon University, the Linfield Review at Linfield College and The Beacon at the University of Portland.

The Collegian is a collegiate newspaper that serves as an educational opportunity for students interested in careers in media.

A complete list of awards is available on the ONPA website.
