Administrative Law Conference Slated

WUCL's Center for Law and Government, the Oregon Association of Administrative Law Judges (OAALJ) and the Oregon State Bar Administrative Law Section are co-sponsoring an administrative law conference on Saturday October 30, 2004 at Willamette's Truman Wesley Collins Legal Center in Salem. "Delivering Justice in Administrative Decisionmaking in Oregon" is an opportunity for law students and practicing law professionals to hone their administrative legal skills and stay current on important issues such as ethics, developing trends in federal and state administrative law, current evidence issues in administrative hearings, and resolving contested cases without hearings.

Justice W. Michael Gillette of the Oregon Supreme Court will be the keynote speaker. The panels will feature top-notch legal experts such as Judges Virginia L. Linder and Darleen Ortega of the Oregon Court of Appeals, Administrative Law Judge Abigail L. Herman of the Workers' Compensation Board, Judges Gretchen L. Miller, Fred R. Baisden and Thomas E. Ewing from the Office of Administrative Hearings, attorneys general from the Department of Justice, top attorneys working in the area of administrative law and Willamette law professors, among others.

The conference will offer 9.5 MCLE credits (approval pending): 7.5 general credits; 1 ethics credit; 1 eliminating bias credit (includes 4 credits for recorded breakout sessions not attended by participant, but later reviewed). The conference is free for law students; $135 (early registrations postmarked by October 8) or $160 (postmarked after October 8) for OAALJ and/or OSB Administrative Law Section Members; $170 (postmarked by October 8) or $195 (after October 8) for non-members.

"Students interested in pursing a career in administrative and public law can really benefit from this opportunity," said Steven Green, Willamette Law professor and Director of the Center for Law and Government. This is the second such administrative law conference co-sponsored by Willamette University College of Law. "Students may also attend our first-ever Administrative Law Day on Friday, October 29, to hear presentations about careers in administrative law and public law."

During Administrative Law Day, information will be available on a new law student essay contest, which will offer a $1,000 prize.
