Over the last several years Willamette has made important strides regarding sustainability because it has deep roots on this campus. But as we look ahead, it is critical for us to think about how we can broaden our institutional committment to the values embodied in the four E's. How can we help create an environment in which concern about sustainability is not compartmentalized but provides a framework for all the decisions we make? Building off the work of previous retreats, participants this year will help identify concrete, positive steps that can be taken to facilitate this institutional growth. |

An opening session will acquaint participants with the long range vision/goals that have emerged from earlier conversations. These goals will be reexamined in subsequent discussions that focus on identifying steps to achieving a broader institutional committment to sustainability. Participants will break into four groups: |
|
Focusing on the administration of units and departments within the University. Focusing on the aspects of university life that are directly related to
teaching and research. Focusing on the nonacademic aspects of life on campus. Focusing on the intersections between Willamette and the broader community. |
| Making decisions that are consistent with the core values of sustainability can be a complex tax. Recognizing that this challenge is one significant barrier to institutional change, each break-out group will think about what types of decisions are likely to be most challenging and what tools or resources would make those decisions easier. |
