The music department is one of Willamette's largest and most prolific, due partially to its inclusiveness. Many non-majors become involved in music because they can immerse themselves in the musical arts to whatever extent they want. Meanwhile, those who decide to make music their core pursuit here are presented with a program recognized for excellence, breadth, and spirit.
In some ways, the music department is the most flexible on campus. Majors can choose between several areas of focus, including music education, music performance, and composition. Also, there are two different degrees offered: a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Music. The difference between the two is emphasis; the Bachelor of Arts is a well-rounded liberal arts degree, while the Bachelor of Music is a more specialized, professional track toward a career in the music fields.
Over the past several years, Willamette's music groups have been everywhere from the Capitol steps to Carnegie Hall to South Africa and back. If you are interested in music at all - whether you are an accomplished vocalist or simply want to know a couple chords on the guitar - our department will help you get better.
