Alumnus Ron Potts ’65 Takes Third at Bösendorfer International Amateur Competition
Ron Potts attended Willamette and his mother, brother and son are all graduates. A talented pianist early on, Ron turned down an opportunity to attend the Juilliard School to pursue a career in medicine. But he hasn’t lost his touch.
Ron was one of 25 pianists from around the world invited recently to the prestigious Bösendorfer International Amateur Competition in Vienna. Part of his preparation included a return to Willamette’s campus to play an informal practice recital. And his work paid off: He was awarded third place in the competition, an astounding achievement that places him among remarkable peers.
Although the competition requires that entrants qualify as amateurs — that is, they do not support themselves financially by performing or teaching music — Potts’ fellow competitors boast substantial formal training and regularly play concerts worldwide.
