Grant provides American Sign Language interpretation for events

Willamette Professor Scott Pike and Andrea Foust, coordinator for the Center for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (CASA), were recent recipients of a Society Outreach Grant from the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA).

Their grant, entitled "Providing Access to the Salem Area's Deaf Community" will allow CASA and the Salem Society of the AIA to have American Sign Language interpreters at most Willamette events in the coming year; the university recently began the practice on its own with much success.

The selection committee for the award noted the project's likelihood of reaching out to a new sector of the local community, promoting the field of archaeology, and encouraging diverse membership in the AIA (as well as increasing the visibility of Willamette and its academic programs).
