Willamette University, Students at the Mill Stream

September 2010

DormRoomThe students are here! The current group of first-year students, along with those joining the graduate schools, arrived recently for their orientation programs. The CLA orientation, Opening Days, was capped by a visit from Jonah Lehrer, nationally known writer/neuroscientist who recently penned How We Decide. Lehrer gave a perceptive and enlivening Convocation lecture to officially open the academic year.

Much to our delight, this means that one of the main fixtures of Willamette's campus -- the Bistro -- is back in business for the fall. The College of Law, in fact, now has its own "satellite Bistro" of sorts: Rick's Cafe, which sells much of the same options as the Bistro, now occupies a newly renovated space on the south end of the College of Law. (The WU News team went over for an official fact-finding meeting and we can tell you that the coffee's just as good.)

Additionally, remember to come back to campus for Reunion Weekend later this month! We're ahead of last year's registration pace by quite a margin, and we're hoping for many more. Remember that the early-bird special discount has been extended through Tuesday, Sept. 7. Register here.

The Bearcat football team deserves mention as well: The fall season is set to begin this Saturday, when the Bearcats take on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The first home game is slated for Sept. 18 against the University of Southern Oregon. Come out and support your Bearcats from all the fall sports teams!

Remember too that the memorial service for former Professor Art Payton, who passed away in April, will take the Sunday of Reunion Weekend at 2 p.m., on campus. All alumni and friends are welcome.

Also, there will be a memorial concert at Willamette Sept. 19 in recognition of David Ingram, who passed away in June. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary Stuart Rogers Music Center, and all alumni and friends of the university are welcome to that attend event as well.
