Campus is alive once again! Students have been moving into residence halls, renewing friendships, getting acquainted with new classmates and standing in line to purchase books in preparation for the fall semester. To help you reconnect with campus life, here’s a snapshot of the entering class followed by a few announcements.

The Class of 2014 has 432 enthusiastic and accomplished first-year students (plus about 50 transfer students and a group of international students) who arrived on campus last Thursday to begin their orientation. This year’s class comes from 24 states and 17 countries. They were chosen from an applicant pool of over 8,000, making this a record year for applications at Willamette. Statistically, these students are high achievers: More than 50 percent of them were in the top 10 percent of their high school class and the average GPA is 3.79 (on a 4.0 scale). They are a welcome addition to the vibrant intellectual community at Willamette.

Family Weekend 2010 is coming up October 15-17. This event includes something for everyone: mini-university sessions, a delicious brunch, sporting events, outdoor activities, a hilarious comedian, music and theater performances, and much more. Priority registration closes on Sept. 24, so don’t delay in registering and purchasing tickets for this action-packed, fun-filled weekend. For more information, or to register, visit the Family Weekend website. Family Weekend is a great time to check in with your student to find out how he or she has adjusted to college.

Many parents like to communicate with one another to ask questions and share information. We make it easy to connect with other parents through our parent listserv.  Exclusively for Willamette parents, the listserv allows you to interact with parents via email. You can subscribe now at willamette.edu/parents by clicking on “parents listserv.” If you are a returning parent who previously subscribed to the listserv, you do not need to re-subscribe.

It seems like there is always an event on campus, and I hope you have chance to participate in a Willamette event this year. Check the main website regularly to find out what’s happening on campus or in your area; you never know when a music group or a sporting event might be close to where you live.
