Preparing for the fall semester

Many of you are veterans at packing up your students for another year at college. For some, though, this is the first year and you’re anxious to find out what’s in store for the semester. Here’s a few tips everyone will find helpful.

Opening Days starts Thursday, Aug. 25. The Opening Days program helps freshmen and transfer students transition to campus life. Many upperclassmen are involved in the program as leaders, so campus will definitely be alive. Residence halls officially open for returning students on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m., and the first meal plan meals are served on Monday, Aug. 29. Classes begin Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Communicating with other parents is easy to do online via our parent listserv or our new Facebook page. In both places you can post messages or questions for parents, reply to messages and read responses from community members. While both the listserv and Facebook have been quiet over the summer, I expect lots of activity once school begins.  Visit the parent listserv or our Facebook page to join either.

As always, we have a number of events this fall that you are welcome to attend. Our biggest event, Family Weekend, will be October 14-16. You will receive registration information early in September. And, for you golfers, FORE Willamette will be Monday, Sept. 12, at Pumpkin Ridge outside of Portland. The tournament benefits all athletic programs at Willamette and there are still spots available.

No doubt you already know about our campus event link. Check it frequently for a wide range of speakers, theatre and music performances and other things going on around campus.

With the beginning of Steve Thorsett’s tenure as president, it looks to be a year of excitement. The freshman class is over 600 students this year, so campus will be bustling. I hope you have a chance to join us on campus this year.
