Willamette University, Students at the Mill Stream

August 2012

We're back, ready for a new academic year (believe it or not) just around the corner. The news starts in London!

Nick Symmonds '06 advances to the Olympic 800-meter final

In his first-round heat, Symmonds took first place, courtesy of his typical late-race surge; just today, in the semifinals, he missed automatic qualification by finishing third in his heat but was advanced to the final by virtue of his time.

The final is scheduled for this Thursday at 8 p.m. London time, or 11 a.m. PST.

Stay updated day-by-day at the athletics website or at NBC.

Introducing Dennis Bergvall, vice president for advancement

The division that happily brings you Willamette's communications, marketing, development and alumni relations will soon be led by Dennis Bergvall, a Whitman alumnus (we forgive him for that!) who comes to us from a post as vice president for institutional advancement at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Bergvall has also served as dean of development at the College of Idaho and vice president for enrollment at Alma College. He and his family might be exploring Salem real estate as we write.

We welcome Mr. Bergvall to Waller early next month and thank Denise Callahan '95, MBA'00, who will be returning to her role as senior director of alumni relations, for her able interim work over the last year.

Another thank-you to our Leadership Circle members

Willamette would once again like to recognize our alumni, parents and friends who generously supported the university last fiscal year at the Leadership Circle giving level. We sincerely appreciate your investment in our students, our faculty and the academic excellence of the university.

To see who's given at this generous level, visit the Leadership Circle online honor roll of donors.

Parents and insurance

There's been some conversation among parents about student insurance changes related to the health-care legislation and what that means for families; the kind folks over at Bishop Wellness Center have stepped in to provide good info and help with those details. If you need, you can get in touch with them directly at (503) 370-6062, email bishop-insurance@willamette.edu, or check the student insurance website.

Liberty Mutual deals continue

And here's another plug for our ongoing partnership with Liberty Mutual: By alumni demand, we've teamed up for deals on just about anything you might want to insure. Take a look and crunch some numbers if you're in the market (or wonder if you should be).

Around the 'Bend'

The Scene is on the way, too, and a few Bend, Ore., alumni will be front and center. As a primer, here's a different news item about another Bend Bearcat. Central Oregon is busy these days, apparently.

Happy August, everyone.
