Alumni Weekend football game puts WU offense on display, Bearcats continue perfect record

The Bearcats gained 559 yards on offense and forced six turnovers on defense as they pulled away from the Pacific University Boxers in a non-conference game at McCulloch Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 22. With the win during Alumni Weekend, Willamette improved its record to 3-0 on the season. Pacific dropped to 1-2.

The teams will meet again on Saturday, Nov. 3 in a Northwest Conference game on the Pacific campus in Forest Groved, Ore.

Willamette opened the game with an 11-play, 17-yard drive for a touchdown, and WU quarterback Josh Dean (Jr., Dana Point, CA/Dana Hills HS) threw for four touchdowns while completing 33 of 46 passes for 353 yards. He did not throw an interception.

Meanwhile, the Willamette secondary made four interceptions. Cody Pastorino (Sr., S, Glenn, CA/Willows HS) led the way with two pickoffs, while Dominic David (Sr., S, Salem, OR/South Salem HS/Portland State Univ.) and Tait Stephens (Jr., S, Sammamish, WA/Skyline HS) each recorded one.

Willamette led 6-3 after the first quarter and held a 23-10 advantage at halftime. The Bearcats added 14 points in the third quarter and tallied the first touchdown of the fourth quarter for a 44-10 lead. After Pacific scored its second touchdown of the game, Jones threw a touchdown pass to Beau Smith (So., WR, Roseville, CA/Roseville HS) to complete the scoring.

Since then, the Bearcats have played one other game, moving up to 4-0 on the season.


Women's soccer takes down George Fox 

Veronica Ewers of Willamette scored on this header to give the Bearcats the lead in a 1-0 win.

Willamette defeated George Fox University, 1-0, in women's soccer on Sunday, Sept. 30, as the Bearcats limited the Bruins to three total shots and no shots on goal. WU freshman Veronica Ewers (MF/F, Moscow, ID/Moscow HS) scored the game's only goal at 59:07.

Ewers achieved her goal on a header into the left corner of the net. Malia Simpson (So., MF, Fairbanks, AK/West Valley HS) earned an assist by providing a crossing pass to Ewers from the right side.

Willamette improved to 4-5-1 overall, 2-3-1 in the Northwest Conference. George Fox dropped to 1-7-2 overall, 0-6-0 in the NWC.

Bearcat goalkeeper Nicole Price (Jr., Auburn, WA/Thomas Jefferson HS) did not have to make a save while recording her second shutout in as many days. She earned 12 saves in a 0-0 two-overtime tie with Linfield College on Saturday.

Against George Fox, the Bearcats took a total of 14 shots, including eight shots on goal. Andi Rowan (Sr., MF, Boise, ID/Timberline HS) led Willamette with

Paige Lancourt (#11), Veronica Ewers (#12) and Ashland Bernard (#9) celebrated after Ewers scored for the Bearcats.

 four total shots, while placing three of her shots on goal. Paige Lancourt (Jr., MF, Eagle, ID/Eagle HS) achieved three shots overall, with one shot on goal.

GFU goalie Ally Swanson kept Willamette from extending its lead by recording three of her seven saves after the goal by Ewers. She made saves on shots by Rowan at 63:38,  Sarah Desautels (So., F, Snohomish, WA/Glacier Peak HS) at 72:23 and Rowan again at 80:04.

Michelle Young took a corner kick for GFU at 74:05, but the ensuing shot by Molly Norton went wide of the goal.

The Bearcats earned a 4-2 edge in corner kicks, with two in each half. Willamette's shots also was evenly split with seven shots in each period.

WU will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. The Northwest Conference game is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
