We're excited to announce this year's alumni award winners: Leland "Rocky" Johnson '70 (Sparks Medallion); Nick Symmonds '06 (Young Alumni Leadership Award); Paula Casey '69, JD'72 (Distinguished Alumni Award); Tinh Mahoney '86 (Distinguished Alumni Award); and Punit Renjen MM'86 (Distinguished Alumni Award). Check the next issue of The Scene for more information about each, as this is quite an impressive lineup. For now, we recommend bombarding them with happy emails if you're acquainted. Congratulations, all!
The Big Life Plan, a very popular career-discernment model, is coming to Portland March 23. Alumni are encouraged to attend and explore career paths, learn what your particular gifts are and how to apply them, and plan that career transition you've been leaning toward. You'll walk away with concrete solutions to slippery issues. There's no charge, though alumni need to register beforehand.
Also, register now for Willamette Academy’s annual benefit, Believe in Me! The benefit will be held March 15 at the Grand Ballroom (187 High St.) in Salem. Illusionist and mentalist Hart Keene will be presenting his Magic, Mind-reading, and Comedy Show, featuring the routine that landed him on NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Proceeds boost Willamette Academy's college-access programming.
Finally, an important but very sad note. Steve Prothero, professor emeritus of mathematics, died at his home March 1. Prothero joined WU's faculty back in 1963, serving 46 years before retiring and moving to emeritus status in 2009. During those years, he also coached the Willamette men's golf team for 44 years, and the WU women's golf team for seven. He was inducted into the Willamette Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this year.
An on-campus celebration of Prothero's life and contributions is in the works. Interested parties may contact the Office of the Chaplains for updates.
