Willamette Women's Golf Team Places Third at GFU Spring Kickoff

The Willamette University women's golf team achieved third place at the GFU Spring Kickoff, as the Bearcats finished just one stroke out of second place at the Oregon Golf Association (OGA) Golf Course on Saturday, March 1. The tournament, hosted by George Fox University, was originally scheduled for two days, but Sunday's second round was canceled due to the weather.

George Fox University won the team title with a score of 331. The Bruins achieved a 25-stroke advantage over Concordia University (Ore.), which took second place at 356.

Willamette's score in third place was 357. Lewis & Clark College finished fourth at 373 and Pacific University was fifth at 459. Oregon State University entered four golfers who competed as individuals, but the Beavers did not earn a team score.

The Bearcats were led by Taneesh Sra (So., Fremont, CA/Mission San Jose HS) and LettaJoe Gallup (Jr., Alameda, CA/Holy Names HS) who both carded an 86 to earn part of a four-way tie for 12th place. Mckenzie Weinhold (Jr., Placerville, CA/El Dorado HS/Univ. of Nevada-Reno) of Willamette shot an 86 and placed 17th.

Also competing for Willamette were Jessi Weaver (Fr., Lincoln City, OR/Taft HS) and Elise Levy (So., Reno, NV/Bishop Manogue HS). Weaver concluded the round at 97, while Levy completed the course at 100.

First place in the individual standings went to Jesse Hamilton of Oregon State, who shot a 5-over-par 78. Sydney Maluenda of George Fox and Krissy Peterson from OSU tied for second place, as each golfer carded an 80. Three competitors -- Lauren Fischer of OSU, along with Melissa Nugent and Hailey Ostrom from GFU -- tied for fourth place at 82.

With the second day canceled, Willamette's next scheduled event is the UC-Santa Cruz Invitational, set for March 29-30. The tournament will be held at the Pacific Grove Golf Links in Pacific Grove, Calif.

DeLong Receives Honorable Mention All-NWC Recognition

Willamette University junior point guard Jojo DeLong (Santa Clarita, CA/Canyon HS) has been named Honorable Mention All-Northwest Conference for the 2013-14 women's basketball season, as determined in voting by the NWC head coaches.

The All-Northwest Conference Team honored a total of 17 women's basketball players. Six athletes were chosen for the First Team with five players on the Second Team and six on the Honorable Mention list.

DeLong averaged 12.9 points per game and tied for second in the NWC with 3.6 assists per game. She scored 323 points and registered 91 assists while starting all 25 games for the Bearcats. She was credited with 82 rebounds, an average of 3.3 boards per game. She led the conference by making 64 three-pointers during the season.

She was named NWC Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week for games played between Nov. 18 and Nov. 24.

In her three years at Willamette, DeLong has started every game for a total of 75 games played. She has accumulated 562 points, 231 assists and 221 rebounds. She has scored a total of 109 three-point baskets.

DeLong achieved a career-high 27 points against Pacific University on Feb. 4, 2014 and earned a career-high 10 assists versus Concordia University (Ore.) on Nov. 20, 2013. She grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in the same game against Concordia and also hauled down eight rebounds against Lewis & Clark College on Jan. 18, 2014.

"We are all very proud of Jojo for what she accomplished this season," Willamette Head Coach Peg Swadener said. "What she brings to the team is so much more than just her stats. She makes everyone around her better on a consistent basis, and it's nice to see her rewarded for her efforts with this award."

As a freshman in 2011-12, DeLong earned 129 points, 61 assists and 69 rebounds. She added 110 points, 79 assists and 70 rebounds as a sophomore, before earning career-high numbers in all three categories as a junior.

This season, DeLong scored in double figures 18 times, including seven of Willamette's last 10 games.  She provided three or more assists 17 times and hauled down four or more rebounds 10 times.
