Willamette and George Fox Start Match, but are Suspended by Rain
Bruins Lead 2-1; Action will Resume on Sunday
NEWBERG, ORE. -- Willamette University and George Fox University started their Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Tuesday, April 10 on the GFU campus, but completed only the doubles matches and a few games in singles before rain forced play to be suspended.
When the competition was stopped, GFU held a 2-1 lead. The Bearcats and the Bruins will resume the match on Sunday, April 15 at 11 a.m. (PDT).
George Fox achieved wins at #1 and #3 doubles. In the #1 doubles match, the GFU team of Molly Beaumont and Shaina Inn defeated Shannon Palmer (Sr., Salem, OR/Sprague HS) and Sabrina Gutierrez (So., Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park HS), 8-2. At #3 doubles, Bethany Nguyen and Marissa Chau won for the Bruins against Emily Funabiki (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) in a close match, 9-7.
The Bearcats earned a victory at #2 doubles, as Denise Poltavski (Fr., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) and Emily Bee (Sr., Portland, OR/Lincoln HS) gained the edge over Alyssa Emoto and Cara Griffith, 8-4.
Willamette remained 6-8 overall and 4-6 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats will host Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday, April 14, starting at 10 a.m. It will be Senior Day at the WU Tennis Courts, as the Bearcats honor Palmer and Bee for their contributions to the team over the past four seasons.
GFU held at 7-9 on the season, 2-7 in the NWC. The Bruins will play again on Friday, April 13 when they are scheduled to host Whitman College.
