SALEM, ORE. -- Former Willamette University runner Nick Symmonds ('06) will be seeking his fifth U.S. championship in a row and his second consecutive trip to the Olympics when he competes in the 800-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials, over the next several days in Eugene, Ore. The Olympic Trials will be held at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.

Symmonds, who took first place at the Olympic Trials in 2008 with a thrilling come-from-behind finish, advanced to the semifinals of the Beijing Olympics later that year. Since then, he has added three more U.S. championships in the 800.

In addition, he has continued to excel at the international level. He placed fifth at the IAAF World Championships in the 800 in 2011 after finishing sixth at the World Championships in 2009. He reached the semifinals of the World Championships in 2007.

This year, Symmonds holds the fastest time registered by a U.S. runner at 800-meters with a result of 1:44.32 while taking third place at the Prefontaine Classic on June 2. His personal record in the 800 is 1:43.76, set in 2010.

While running for Willamette during the 2003 through 2006 track and field seasons, Symmonds achieved four NCAA Division III national championships in the 800-meter run and earned three NCAA titles in the 1,500-meter run. He set Willamette records in the 800 (1:45.83 in 2006) and the 1,500 (3:45.55 in 2004).
