Bearcats Finish Third at NWC Fall Classic in Women's Golf
Weaver Earns Sixth Place with a 36-Hole Score of 159
OREGON CITY, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's golf team achieved third place in the final standings of the Northwest Conference Fall Classic, as the 36-hole tournament concluded on Sunday, Oct. 27 at the Stone Creek Golf Club. The Bearcats, who shot 659, were led by freshman Jessi Weaver (Lincoln City, OR/Taft HS), who placed sixth with a score of 159.
Whitman College won the team title with a score of 614. The Missionaries shot 306 in the first round on Saturday and added 308 during the second round on Sunday. George Fox University placed second at 634 (310-324). Willamette's score of 659 included 325 in the first round and 334 over the final 18 holes.
Whitworth University earned fourth place at 671 (329-342). Lewis & Clark College was fifth at 700 (350-350), with Pacific Lutheran University in sixth at 707 (356-351), Linfield College in seventh at 715 (347-368), Pacific University in eighth with a score of 755 (367-388) and the University of Puget Sound in ninth at 822 (404-414).
Sydney Maluenda from George Fox claimed the individual title with a two-day score of 146 (71-75). Her 71 on Saturday was the low round of the tournament.
Katie Zajicek from Whitman finished two strokes behind Maluenda to take second place. She shot 75-73 to end the weekend at 148. Abigail Heringer from Linfield was third at 152 (74-78), while Catelyn Webber from Whitman placed fourth at 156 (79-77).
Fifth place went to Melissa Nugent of George Fox, who carded a 158 (77-80). Weaver was next in sixth place after shooting 79-80. Lou Points from Whitman held seventh place at 160 (79-81) and Alyssa Maine of Whitman was eighth at 161 (84-77).
Taneesh Sra (So., Fremont, CA/Mission San Jose HS) of Willamette tied for 13th place with a score of 165. Other Willamette golfers were Mckenzie Weinhold (Jr., Placerville, CA/El Dorado HS/Univ. of Nevada-Reno) at 166 (83-83), Elise Levy (So., Reno, NV/Bishop Manogue HS) at 169 (83-86) and LettaJoe Gallup (Jr., Alameda, CA/Holy Names HS), who finished at 182 (94-88).
The NWC Fall Classic is worth one-fourth of the overall 2013-14 Northwest Conference title. In addition to the Fall Classic, teams will be competing for one-fourth of the title at the NWC Spring Classic and for one-half of the title at the NWC Championship Tournament. The Fall Classic completed Willamette's fall schedule.
