Willamette Downs Spokane, 6-0, in Men's Tennis Exhibition
SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University men's tennis team defeated the Community College of Spokane, 6-0, in an exhibition match at the Courthouse Tennis Center on Thursday, March 20. The match was an exhibition because Willamette is a member of the NCAA, which does not count competition against community colleges in a team's win-loss record.
The overall match was ended without the completion of #5 singles. No matches were played at #6 singles or #3 doubles.
Will Cooper (Sr., Gresham, OR/Centennial HS) led the Bearcats. He won #1 singles over Blake Lynd from Spokane, 6-2, 6-0. Cooper also worked with Jack Schreiber (Jr., Solana Beach, CA/The Grauer School) to earn an 8-3 victory over Devon Erho and Ish Teshome.
Also winning singles matches for the Bearcats were Schreiber, Blake Brash (So., Boise, ID/Boise HS) and Shrujan Kalidindi (So., Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista HS). Schreiber defeated Erho, 6-1, 6-3, at #2 singles. Brash rolled past Dillion Morrison, 6-0, 6-0, at #3 singles, while Kalidindi downed Teshome, 6-2, 6-2, at #4 singles.
Gunnar Lee (So., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph HS) of Willamette was leading Caleb Deibel of Spokane at #5 singles, 6-4, 4-1, when the overall match was stopped.
In addition to the victory for Cooper and Schreiber at #1 doubles, the Bearcats also picked up a win at #2 doubles by Brash and Kalidindi. They shut out Morrison and Gilberto Murrillo of Spokane, 8-0.
