The Claudia Quintet is one of the most innovative and promising groups to
emerge in recent years from New York City's burgeoning alternative jazz scene.
They have toured extensively over the past decade, receiving widespread
critical acclaim and generating a buzz among jazz and post-rock audiences in
the United States, Europe, Australia and beyond. Simultaneously accessible and
intriguing, the Claudia Quintet's music can perhaps best be described as
"post-jazz:" combining propulsive grooves, sophisticated compositions,
classical chamber music dynamics and instrumental interaction and near
telepathic improvisation. All four of the group's recordings have been
well-received, including four stars from DownBeat magazine, “Best of 2002"
by Jazztimes and a “CHOC” from Jazzman. Their most recent disc, "For," was
released on Cuneiform Records in 2007. Led by drummer and composer John
Hollenbeck, the band has been called by Downbeat Magazine "...a true ensemble
from top to bottom, a sonic equivalent to a hand-woven tapestry." The
quintet's one-of-a-kind sound, with influences ranging from post-grunge punk
to contemporary classical chamber music and everything in between, derives
from the organic interplay of its virtuosos: Hollenbeck (drums, percussion,
toys), Drew Gress (double bass), Matt Moran (vibes), Ted Reichman (accordion)
and Chris Speed (clarinet, tenor sax). The group will be joined for this
performance by renowned jazz pianist Gary Versace, who most recently has
worked with John Scofield, John Abercrombie, Maria Schneider and jazz
saxophone legend Lee Konitz.
