Experimental Biology 2008 in San Diego CA April 5-9, 2008. A multi-society, interdisciplinary, scientific meeting featuring plenary and award lectures, symposia, oral and poster sessions, career services, and exhibits of scientific equipment, supplies, and publications. Professor Stasinos Stavrianes and Exercise Science Senior Dan Yaeger will present three posters at the American College of Sports Medicine Northwest Chapter Annual Meeting in Seattle WA Feb 29-March 1, 2008. Titles are: 1) Stavrianeas, S., Yaeger, D.B. Exercise intensity influences the onset and magnitude of cardiovascular drift.
2) Yaeger, D. B., Stavrianeas, S. A second incremental test is needed to estimate MLSS. 3)

Professor Peter Harmer will conduct a session titled "Penetrating Insights: the US Fencing Association Sports Medicine Program as a model for integrating clinical practice, research, community service, and professional development."
Seniors Present
Ten Exercise Science majors presented their work on 11/30/07. ExSci classes were cancelled for the day to give other ExSci students the opportunity to attend the presentations.
Carson Undergraduate Research Presentation
Brittany Thiemens (ExSci '08) presented her work "VO2 max Testing in Swimmers: Non-Sport Specific Monark Arm Crank vs. Sport-Specific VASA Ergometer" on 11/8/07. Testing maximal oxygen consumption in swimmers on sport-specific and non sport-specific machinery to determine if the sport-specific machinery produced hightest VO2 max values.

Department hires new Instructor
Michael Lockard joins Willamette in August 2007 as the fifth full-time ExSci faculty member. Mr. Lockard will be teaching Human Physiology and Physiology of Exercise Fall Semester.
He is completing his PhD in kinesiology at the University of Maryland. He received his MA there and his BS in Sports Biology at Springfield College in Massachusetts. He held an NIH Pre-doctoral Research Fellowship and was named a Distinguished Teaching Assistant at University of Maryland. His work has been published in MedSciSports Exerc and he has presented papers in national and regional venues.
Professor Selected
Professor Peter Harmer was among 14 faculty, staff and students selected by the Dean's Council to write discurive essays on freedom of expression. In response to the challenging campus events of the fall and spring terms, University President Lee Pelton asked faculty, staff and students to submit proposals for essays that would sharpen and expand our understanding of the complexity of freedom of expression in a multicultural and democratic society. 6/11/07
