Rules for the Use of Ford 122

We have been graciously allowed access to Ford Hall Room 122 for ICL classes subject to the strict rule that NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED. Any spills on the desks in this room could short out electrical connections and constitute a hazard, to say nothing of the expense of repair. Please adhere to this rule. As a courtesy to our presenters, we also request that all cell phones, beepers, alarm watches and other noise-making devices be turned off before any presentation.

End-of-Semester Luncheon

The End-of-Semester Luncheon will be held this year on Thursday, December 3rd at Montag Den. The cost will be $13ºº. Our Co-Directors of Social Services, Irene Konopasek and Evelynn Smith, will begin collecting checks for the luncheon on November 10th. They request NO CASH. Please make your checks payable to WUICL. Thank you!.

Fair Trade Presentation

On November 9th, One Fair World will have a Fair Trade speaker visiting Salem. Doug Dirks recently served for two years as Board Chair for the Fair Trade Federation and is a master storyteller about the impact of Fair Trade in the lives of artisans around the world. He is scheduled for appearances on the Willamette campus and an evening presentation at the Grand Theater on the 9th. Both events are open to the public.

Master Storyteller from Ten Thousand Villages

Monday, November 9th @ 4 p.m.
Hatfield Room, 2nd floor of the Hatfield Library
Willamette University
and
Monday, November 9th @ 7 p.m.
Historic Grand Theatre, 187 High St. NE

Refreshments at One Fair World, 474 Court St. NE

ALL EVENTS FREE TO THE PUBLIC

Considered instrumental within the fair trade industry, Mr. Dirks has been at the forefront of the fair trade mission since its inception and introduction into North American markets. Mr. Dirks works in Public Relations for Ten Thousand Villages, one of the first and largest fair trade purveyors of goods in the U.S. Ten Thousand Villages is a founding member of both the Fair Trade Federation (USA and Canada) and the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO, formerly the International Fair Trade Association or IFAT). Mr. Dirks was board chair for a 2 years term that ended in May 2009.
Prior to his work with TTV, he worked to help develop several businesses in Bangladesh where women who were considered "unemployable" could export to fair trade organizations. Over the years he has worked with TTV, he has traveled to many of the 37 countries where TTV buys products and met the artisans. He is an excellent at sharing the stories of the artisans benefited by fair trade and he himself is an engaging proponent of fair trade values and concepts.

One Fair World (formerly Ten Thousand Villages) in Salem, Oregon, is a fair trade, not-for-profit retailer of quality, artisan-crafted goods.

Move to Ford 122

The Willamette Institute for Continued Learning will temporarily move our Tuesday and Thursday sessions to Ford Hall, Room 122 (Film Studies Room) beginning with the afternoon session on Tuesday, October 20th.

Please note:
You may enter the room at either ground level (back of room) or by taking the elevator to the lower level to enter at the front of the room. Please be careful on the stairs and do not sit in the front row. No food or drink allowed in the room.

Additional Computer Class

A second class for those who would like instruction in basic computer and Internet skills for viewing the ICL web site is under consideration. The previous class was attended by five members, so there may be more members who would like to brush up their skills. Since you're reading this on the Internet, you have probably already acquired those skills, but you could pass this news on to any of your ICL friends, who you think might benefit from a class. An announcement will be made in class, and a sign-up sheet will be posted on the ICL noticeboard in Smullin B-17.

Dates for Your Calendar

The last day of Fall Semester will be December 3, 2009.
The first day of Spring Semester will be January 19, 2010.
The last day of Spring Semester will be May 4, 2010.
Spring Break will be March 22 through 26, 2010.

Talent Search

At present, our Director of Information Services, Peter Ronai, is the only ICL member with the responsibility for designing and maintaining the ICL web site. With the increasing dependence of ICL on communication through the web site, the ICL Board is anxious to find a back-up person who can contribute to web site maintenance and who could take over in case of illness or other incapacity of our "webmaster." Peter is starting to implement the web site in Adobe's Dreamweaver, an advanced web design software program, so an aspiring "assistant webmaster" will need to be familiar with both HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and Dreamweaver. Please contact Peter or Don Gallagher if you are interested.

H1N1 Flu News

Willamette University has a web site entitled "2009 H1N1 Flu Preparedness Information" at:
http://www.willamette.edu/news/emergency_prep/2009_h1n1/
It will be continually updated as new information becomes available.

Health Updates on ICL Members

Permission: Before we can notify the ICL membership about a member's illness, or give an update, or send a card or flowers from ICL, clear permission to notify the ICL membership must be obtained from the ill member (or ill member's relative). Only after clear permission has been obtained will ICL make an announcement of the member's condition or situation. Once permission is obtained, members should contact Social Services Co-Directors Irene Konopasek or Evelynn Smith so the announcement can be made and a card (or flowers where appropriate) sent.
No Announcements on Web Site: Because permission extends only as far as notifying the ICL membership, announcements about medical issues of ICL members will not be posted on this web site, but will be announced in class. The web site (with the exception of the section devoted to the Membership Directory) is accessible by the general public, who do not need to be informed of ICL members' illnesses.

Information Services Update

Continual Updating of Newsletter: As a result of the Board decision at the September Board meeting (see below), the Newsletter will be published on this web site as a continually updated document, rather than as a once per month publication. This will allow "breaking news" (as they say in the news business) to be brought to the attention of members with a minimum of delay. This means that members who wish to keep up-to-date with ICL information and events will need to check the Newsletter frequently.

Online Membership Directory: The 2009-2010 Membership Directory was posted online towards the end of Spring semester, with access protected by a log-in page requiring entry of user name and password. Initially, the Directory was a .pdf version of the printed Directory. While the .pdf format saved work, it resulted in slow downloads to members' computers. Accordingly, the Membership DIrectory was completely rewritten in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), resulting in faster downloads, and enabling higher quality color photos of members to be used. It has also allowed addition of an alphabetical index to member surnames, and users can now navigate from any page to any other page. At the same time, an added level of security has been added, with user name/password protection of each page, not just the log-in page, to foil "spambots," programs used by spammers to troll the Internet for email addresses. (ICL members need enter user name and password only once for each Internet session, not for every page viewed.)

• Printed Membership Directory: The printed Membership Directory is available in Smullin B-17. See Don Gallagher or Peter Ronai if you do not yet have your copy (one copy per member).

• Curriculum Guide: The Fall Semester Curriculum Guide (Class Schedule) has been available online for several weeks, and is being continually updated as additional information on topics or speakers comes to hand. As we have emphasized many times, it is important to check the online Class Schedule frequently (using the link on the home page), as changes and updates are unavoidable.

• Picnic Photos: Photos taken by Evelynn Smith at the ICL Picnic on August 13 can be viewed on the ICL web site's home page as a slide show in a window on the left side of the home page, and instructions are given for viewing the slideshow in a full-screen format.

• Databases for Board Members: Several databases have been set up as "Google Docs" and saved to Google servers, allowing Board members to view online a single updatable version of each database from any computer or smart phone connected to the Internet. Like the online ICL Membership Directory, these databases are protected from access by unapproved individuals.

October Board Meeting Minutes

Order: Meeting called to order by Gary Beck at 3:00 pm on October 1, 2009.

Members present: Executive Director–Gary Beck, Curriculum Services–Don Gallagher, University Support Services–Gerry and Patricia Lundeen, Membership Services–Louise Schroeder, Social Services–Irene Konopasek and Evelynn Smith, Information Services–Peter Ronai, Willamette University representative–Alice Sorensen, Past Executive Director–Jean Rover, Secretarial Services–Rosa Barton

• Excused Absence: Financial Services–Dawn Smith,

Minutes for the September 10, 2009 meeting: were approved as presented.

• Information:

    – We are still scheduled for both Smullin B-17 and the Ford Hall auditorium. We are hoping to be in Ford Hall after the October 16 dedication (perhaps as early as the week of October 12). No food or beverages, including water, will be allowed. A water spill could short the electrical connections in the desks. There will be no seating on the front row until safety measures are in place. The seating capacity for the auditorium is just over 100. Assisted hearing devices will be available.
    – A sign-up sheet will be posted on the ICL bulletin board for those still interested in learning how to use the computers in the Willamette Library to access the ICL web site. Five people attended the last training session.
    – Peter will archive the ICL Board Meeting Minutes. Copies of the minutes are posted on the ICL bulletin board and filed in the ICL office. Rosa will post the monthly schedule on the bulletin board.
    – ICL members are not eligible for student disability services.
    – We are considering buying a Kindle.

• Directors' Reports:

    –Financial Services:
    • Dawn's financial report was circulated in advance of the meeting, and will be attached to the paper copy of the minutes (it is not available online).

    Information Services:
    • Peter has ordered the Dreamweaver web authoring software program used by WU. It does work with password-protected (.php) files. He has also implemented the following changes to the ICL web site:

    • The "Letter from the Editor" on Internet Security has been moved to a new free-standing page with its own link ("Primer on Internet Security") in the "Site Links" column of the Home page.
    • Clicking on the "Class Schedule" link on the Home page now takes the user to a "Breaking News" page, containing the latest updates to the Newsletter. From this "Breaking News" page, the user can either navigate to the full Newsletter, or proceed to the appropriate month of the Class Schedule.

    University Support:
    • Gerry reported 15 ID cards remain unclaimed. The Board will be responsible for sending e-mail or a letter reminding individuals of the policy stating current members need to notify a Board member if they cannot attend the academic program for more than 6 consecutive weeks. After that period of time, their membership status may be reviewed by the Board. (Membership Policies/Procedures, Item 13).
    • Pat is working on a list of privileges the ICL ID card gives members.
    • The first Atkinson lecture is October 16th. Tickets will be available Monday, October 5. Only you may present your ICL ID card to get your ticket.

    Curriculum Services:
    • Don reported that George Adkins will present “The Big History” series.
    • He is investigating a Japanese culture focus which could involve student presentations in April, and having lunch at Toyko University.
    • Jeanie Bragg is a resource for Japanese dance.
    • The possibility of having an overnight field trip was also discussed.
    • Don welcomes feedback on the Molecular Biology presentation.
    • Are we interested in the primer programs?

–Membership Services: Gary will send e-mails and letters from The Board to members who have not been attending classes reminding them their membership status may be reviewed. Mako Hayashi-Mayfield will be joining ICL in January.

    Social Services:
    • Irene and Evelynn sent cards from ICL to Dorelle Ronai, Norma Pati, David Cozart and Charlotte Collins.
    • Irene and Evelynn will confirm that Montag is reserved for the end-of-term event, December 3.
    • ICL resumes Tuesday, January 19, 2010.
    • Thank-you notes are available under the cabinet in Smullin for those wishing to express appreciation for guest speakers.

–Willamette Representative: Alice Sorensen invited us to attend the October 16 dedication of the Ford Hall Auditorium. We may be scheduled for Ford Hall as early as October 12 if the sound system is finished. Normally we would know at the beginning of the term if the Ford Hall auditorium is available or if we would need to meet in Smullin because of a faculty request.

Gary welcomes ideas about how ICL members can help Willamette University, before his meeting with Dr. Douglass. Please email them to him as they occur to you. Pat will ask for ideas as she contacts departments regarding our ID privileges.

• Next Meeting

The next Board meeting will be held Thursday, November 5 at 3:00 pm.

• Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 4:35 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Rosa Barton
Secretarial Services
