Biography

Simon Deacon has been teaching at Goldsmiths, University of London since 2002 and became a permanent member of the teaching staff in 2008. He holds undergraduate degrees in Theatre (from Rose Bruford College) and Music (1st Class Hons from Goldsmiths College) and a graduate degree in Jazz Composition from The Manhattan School of Music, New York, as a Fulbright Scholar.

As Director of Popular Music has overseen the development of performance culture in popular music in the department. In addition to College based activities which include a regular and successful showcase night at the Students union, collaborations and events have included: Goldsmiths Vocal Ensemble (directed by ESKA) with the Matthew Herbert Big Band at the Royal Festival Hall (for the London Jazz Festival), The Barbican (for the British Council’s 75th birthday), Glastonbury; Goldsmiths Big String (directed by Julian Ferraretto) with the Neil Cowley Trio at the Barbican (for the London Jazz Festival), Antonio Forcione at the Purcell Room; PureGold (the department’s Summer music festival) launches at the Southbank Centre.

Simon is one of the founding members and a Creative Director of NX Records, a professional independent record label based in the Department of Music, in collaboration with Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Records.
