It is our belief that we can all learn from each other. Regardless of the job you hold at Willamette University, you are a part of the educational experience for our students as they seek a balanced and meaningful experience. Our office operates on the premise that the university-community collaboration is mutually beneficial and adheres to Willamette University’s moto; “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.”
We encourage a sense of civic responsibility through critical engagement and participation in our community. It is our goal to provide the staff and faculty or Willamette University with resources and opportunities to evoke positive change in our community and with our students. We encourage you to become a mentor to our students who are learning how to become leaders in service work.
Let us know if you would like to work with student leaders in developing skills by facilitating a workshop, being available for an informal conversation, or advising a group. Let us know the topics you have experience in and we will help connect you with students. We invite you and your family to participate in the service opportunities that our student leaders create such as Into the Streets during the Martin Luther King Celebration in January or the Take a Break service-immersion trips in March. All of our events are listed in the current opportunities section of this website.
There are many resources for faculty members who are interested in building a service-learning curriculum. Our current opportunities database provides listings of potential community partners. You can request a service-learning undergraduate teaching assistant. Our community and student pages also provide many resources that you may wish to become familiar with as you make referrals. Any community agency or school can add their information to our database by creating their own user name and password. Everything they need to know is listed in our community section of the web page. Students can search for service opportunities by keywords you have identified as a good match for the learning objectives of your course.
We are always expanding our site, so please forward us any resources you think would be beneficial. Please send an email to service@willamette.edu with any questions or suggestions. We look forward to serving with you!
