Class-Required Service: Requirements

Each course will have different requirements depending on the learning objectives of the course and the needs of the community partner. Your course syllabus will outline requirements you need to complete.

All service-learning courses require that you:

  • Show initiative in contacting and finalizing your placement site
  • Complete a set number of hours, related assignments, and evaluate your experience
  • Complete a service learning contract with your service site, to build a mutually beneficial experience. It is important that the work you do actually helps the agency. It is equally important that the experience is meaningful to you.
  • Reflect verbally or in writing, to help you process your experience and connect your learning in the classroom with your learning at the service site

Effective communication with your site is essential in creating a quality experience. It is important that you treat the agency staff and clients with respect, that you communicate any scheduling change and that you follow-through with your commitment. Here is a sample course timeline, to see how courses typically build service-learning into their curriculum.
