Service-Based Clubs

These student organizations are dedicated to providing service to the community. It is easy to get involved. Just email the group that sparks your interest, look for us at the Activities Fair each semester, or show up at our club meetings posted on the universitys master calendar. If you are a part of a student organization that is active in service email service@willamette.edu and we will add your information to the list.

Peers Advocating for Learners in Schools (PALS)

Service Activities: The purpose of PALS is to help Willamette students get involved with volunteer opportunities with local elementary, middle, and high schools. Currently a few of our sites with the most need for volunteers are Bush and Richmond Elementary, both within walking distance of campus. Volunteer opportunities include mentoring a child by eating lunch with him or her once a week and helping and leading after-school programs for small groups of children. PALS mentors stay connected through a list-serve and through occasional group events. For instance, PALS participated in Willamette's Into the Streets service day by organizing a painting project for a group of Willamette students, staff, and faculty during which we painted much of the 3rd floor of Richmond Elementary. If you're interested in more information about mentoring opportunities or to join the list serve, please email Katie at ksalisbu@willamette.edu.

Habitat for Humanity

Service Activities: Habitat for Humanity is a club designed for students to get involved in the Salem community through the organization Habitat for Humanity. Club members participate in service events ranging from fundraisers (both on and off campus) to awareness events, like our annual fundraising/awareness event in the spring, to actual Habitat for Humanity builds in the Salem area. The builds have to be one of the most fun and fulfilling service projects Willamette University students can participate in as we get to see the house start from the foundation up to the installation of light switch covers and blinds. Working alongside with the future home owner, students not only receive a deeper understanding of homelessness and the working poor but also create bonds with their community members and fellow students through service. Habitat for Humanity is a non-denominational organization and is open to all volunteers. If youre interested in more information about joining a build, please email Jordan at jrash@willamette.edu.

Circle K

Service Activities: Circle K International is the worlds premier collegiate service organization. A member of the Kiwanis family, Circle K International boasts a membership of more than 12,000 members on more than 525 campuses around the globe. It also strives to promote service, leadership and friendship through activities on and off campus. For more information on how to get involved please contact Susanna (sbee@willamette.edu) or Sara (scolling@willamette.edu).

Outdoor Pursuits

Service Activities: Outdoor Pursuits is a volunteer oriented service club at Willamette University focused on teaching 4th and 5th graders about science and nature. Our program works in a school that draws students from a low income/high risk area. It is our goal to provide a healthy snack, mentorship, and education about the natural world to the students once a week. We take the students on field trips to places such as OMSI, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, the ocean, as well as local parks. A typical day involves taking role when the students get out of class, playing with the students at recess, providing a snack and then we have a lesson until it is time to pack up and leave. Numerous schools in the Salem area have specifically requested that we start the Outdoor Pursuits program at their schools. Expanding to these schools is one of our current goals that we hope to reach in the near future. We are always looking for more volunteers and if you would like to get involved! Please email Jordan (jcharbon@willamette.edu) or Anna (abalcom@willamette.edu).
