Service Immersion

Service immersion provides a structure to focus all of you energy on social and environmental justice. Participants study the history and culture of the people they will interact with, provide service for multiple organizations that serve a particular social or environmental issue, and engage in discussion to reflect and grow. Service-immersion programs at Willamette University typically last one week, have a maximum of 20 participants, and require that the group live and work together as a community. We turn our cell phones off, put our technological devices away, and keep all of our energy and thoughts focused on our service and discussion. We live simply, trying to recognize our own power and privilege and the impact that we have on the world. Our programs are intense and challenging but the outcome is consistently one of personally growth, greater understanding, and an ignited passion to make a tangible difference in the world. Often participants discover their passion, their vocation, or themselves and re-enter campus with a commitment to serve. New students have the opportunity to participate in JumpStart: NSOCO in August. Continuing students have the opportunity to participate in Take-a-Break during semester breaks.
