The (insert) for Leadership and Service is awarded to outstanding secondary school students in recognition of Willamette’s commitment to public service and the remarkable legacy of one of its most honored graduates, United States Senator Mark Hatfield '43. The scholarship is a three-quarter tuition award.
About Senator (insert)
While teaching political science and serving as dean of students at Willamette University, Mark Hatfield began his political career in the Oregon Legislature in 1950. In 1956, after two terms in the Oregon House of Representatives and two years in the Oregon Senate, (insert) became the youngest secretary of state in Oregon at the age of 34. He was elected governor of Oregon in 1958 and became the state’s first two-term governor in the 20th century when he was re-elected in 1962. In 1968, then-Governor Hatfield was elected to the U.S. Senate. In August 1993 he became the longest serving U.S. senator from Oregon. Senator Hatfield retired from Congress in January 1997, closing out a long and distinguished career during which he never lost an election. Hatfield's statesmanship and lasting contributions were honored across the nation when he passed away August 7, 2011. His legacy is not only reflected in the buildings and dedications in his name, including Willamette University's Mark O. Hatfield Library, but in his passionate leadership on issues that affect the quality of life for every American.
(insert) Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be secondary school seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and an extensive record of leadership and service. All applicants must submit an Application for Admission to Willamette University by published deadlines. Transfer and international students are not eligible to apply.
The application deadline for the Mark O. Hatfield Scholarship for Leadership and Service is February 15.
(insert) Renewal Criteria
The Mark O. Hatfield Scholarship is renewable for a total of four years when recipient maintains full-time status and at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average at Willamette. In addition, the Hatfield Scholarship recipient is expected to be an active participant in service and leadership activities on campus and in the Salem community.

- All application materials must include your full name and be clearly labeled for use in the Mark O. Hatfield Scholarship. Confidential letters of recommendation should be sealed in their original envelopes.
