Make the investment of a lifetime

It didn’t take long for Eric Friedenwald-Fishman to make a name for himself in the field of public relations. At the age of 34, he’s president of The Metropolitan Group, one of the top PR firms in the Pacific Northwest.

Like many young entrepreneurs, the 1988 Willamette graduate struggled to make ends meet when he first started out. But even when he was scraping by on a steady diet of Top Ramen and tap water, he always managed to scrape together enough money to pay his monthly student loan installment of $118.29. And even then, he considered his Willamette education a bargain.

"Every time I wrote that check I thought, ‘That’s the best money I ever spent,’" he recalls. "It was a pleasure to write that check."

The value of a Willamette education hasn’t diminished since Friedenwald-Fishman was enrolled here. Willamette is widely recognized as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation, giving its graduates a distinct edge over students who attend less prestigious schools. The fact is that a degree from Willamette is one of the best investments you can make.

If you need a little help making ends meet, you’re not alone: About 80 percent of Willamette students receive financial assistance. To make a Willamette education as affordable as possible, the university offers a variety of financial aid options, including merit awards and need-based aid. And many students take advantage of student loan programs and part-time employment opportunities that are tailored to their needs.

"Willamette really went out of its way to help me figure out a financial aid plan that would work for me and my parents," says Garrett Kuramoto, a junior politics major. "To me, that was really an indication of how much the university was willing to reach out to a single individual -- which was not the same feeling I got from a lot of schools that I visited or talked to."

Simply put, students at Willamette are valued as individuals. That kind of personal commitment to each and every student is priceless, according to Madge Bauer, whose son, John, graduated from Willamette in 2001.

"At Willamette," Bauer says, "you get what you pay for in spades."
