Assistant Professor of Psychology

Willamette University's Psychology Department seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Psychology to contribute courses and a line of scholarship that emphasize personality and individual differences. We are open to a range of emphases, and supplementary interests may include cross-cultural/ethnic differences, psychological assessment, personnel selection, and aspects of developmental, clinical, and social psychology.

The Psychology Department has 8 full-time faculty.  The current position represents an ongoing tenure track line within the department. Various forms of internal support are available to facilitate faculty research.  Course responsibilities on a 3-2 teaching schedule will include annual offerings of a survey course in Personality, a topical course offering in an area of interest (e.g., alternating years between a sophomore/junior level course and a senior seminar), and senior internship supervision.  In addition, teaching will include periodic rotation into the methods component of our integrated methods/statistics sequence (the labs for which count as a course preparation), Introductory Psychology, and a first year seminar for non-majors called College Colloquium (see www.willamette.edu/cla/colloquium for more information). The new hire will join a department whose current faculty backgrounds include developmental, sensation & perception, neuroscience, cognitive, social, ecological and clinical psychology.  To learn more about the department, faculty and students please visit www.willamette.edu/cla/psychology.

Ph.D. and prior college teaching required; experience in supervising undergraduate research preferred. We seek candidates with a program of publication-oriented research that can involve undergraduate majors in individual differences-based work within the context of a small, private, liberal arts college.  Application materials should specifically address how the candidate sees his or her teaching and research interests supporting the goals of a small, selective undergraduate liberal arts college.

About Willamette:  Founded in Salem in 1842 as the first university in the West, Willamette takes full advantage of its location in the heart of the Willamette Valley, across the street from the state capitol and a one-hour drive from Portland, Eugene, the Oregon Coast and the Cascade Mountains. Willamette is a selective institution with a national student body of roughly 1700 undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts along with graduate programs in law, management, and education.  The academic profile of our undergraduates is strong, with a median solid-subject high school GPA of 3.75 and combined SAT score of 1850.  Recent students have received prestigious NSF, Watson, Truman, Fulbright, and Goldwater fellowships.  For more information please visit www.willamette.edu.

Psychology majors are required to take Introductory Psychology, one course in each of four foundation areas of Psychology, a year long integrated methods and statistics sequence, and one 400-level course or seminar. Students must also complete either an internship or thesis as a senior experience. There are opportunities for Psychology Honors designation for our top students, and our faculty have active research and publication agendas that involve students, many of whom pursue graduate study in psychology and related fields.
