History and Demographics

New Hope Foursquare Church is a relatively young church. It was started as a home church in 1978. The church grew steadily until 1985 when it purchased a school in Valsetz, Oregon, and transported the building to its current location at the corner of Cordon and Swegle Roads.

Several churches have been planted from New Hope, including West Salem Foursquare (Salem, Oregon) and New Hope Christian Fellowship in Hilo, Hawaii. The most recent church plant is Lakepoint Community in Keizer, Oregon. Lakepoint began as a satellite church in April, 2005. After almost three years functioning as a satellite location, it became its own church in January, 2008.

We believe the most significant spiritual formation happens in the context of community. As a result there is a strong emphasis on community. Our average weekly attendance is 650 people. The age demographics are widely distributed with the largest single age group from 45-55 years old.

Scope of Internship

Goals

An intern at New Hope would be exposed to a variety of duties and experiences with the hope that this would help them to refine their understanding of their personal vocation.

Tasks

A large portion of the internship this year would be focused on developing a one-year immersive school of ministry for emerging leaders at New Hope, which would be affiliated with the Foursquare Emerging Leader Network. This would require developing a student handbook, working out a school schedule, contacting mentors, putting together promotional materials and preparing applications and a process for reviewing them. For more information about Foursquare Emerging Leader Network, see http://www.emergingleadernetwork.com/content.cfm?id+237.

Other duties would be split between Worship Arts, Children, Youth and Pastoral Care and would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Worship Arts - exposure to the process of developing a worship set, planning a Sunday morning worship service, lighting, sound, graphic displays and participation on the worship team as gifting allows
  • Children's Ministries - aiding the Children's Pastor in preparing for the one-week Day Camp in early August, as well as classroom prep as needed
  • Youth Ministries - involvement in the Wednesday evening program, helping to chaperone events and spending one week at summer camp
  • Pastoral Care - going with a staff pastor on hospital visitations and being involved in benevolence requests as they develop

Typical Week

The typical work week will be Tuesday through Friday. Sundays are also a work day, as this is the day the entire church comes together to worship and fellowship. The work week includes a staff meeting on Wednesday morning. The remainder of the week would be split between the duties described above. In a typical week the intern would work 35 hours.

Theological and Vocational Reflection

A weekly mentoring session with one of the pastoral staff will be set up to discuss ministry realities, Foursquare doctrine and government. Other current ministry books are also a possibility. Theological and vocational reflection will take place during this mentoring time and will be shared by the four pastors on staff: Jim Holm, Sandy Vandagriff, Jeannie Barr and Todd Guevara. Vocational conversation will also take place in the context of the staff community. The intern will be encouraged to spend time each week in personal reflection as well.

Vocational Questions

An internship experience at New Hope would help to answer vocational questions such as:

  • What areas am I gifted in?
  • What am I passionate about?
  • How does a personal relationship with Christ intersect with the mundane tasks necessary to keep an organization going?
  • How can you plan and prepare for the future and remain open to the Spirit in the current moment?
  • Do I feel called to a vocation in the church or am I called to be bi-vocational?

Gifts, Skills and Experience

A successful intern would be flexible, teachable, positive, organized and responsible. They would also benefit from a sense of humor, an adventurous spirit and, above all, a desire to deepen their relationship with God.

Logistics

  • New Hope could help the intern to locate housing.
  • Having a car would be helpful.
  • The internship would begin in June and end in August. Specific dates can be negotiated with the intern.
