Marketing Your Study Abroad Experience

Tips for including study abroad in your résumé, cover letters and job interviews

Résumé

Include two lines on your resume under the education section noting your study abroad experience:

Study Abroad: [Institution, city, country, dates]
Language Skills: [Intermediate/near-fluent/fluent/native + language. Example: Near-fluent Spanish]

Any research work could also come under the education section; volunteer activities/responsibilities might come under experience or perhaps under activities.

Cover Letter and Job Interviews

The following are skills you may have developed through your study abroad experience. When writing cover letters and preparing for job interviews, you should match your skills and attributes to what the employer needs. Did you develop any skills abroad that an employer might value?

  • Communication skills (including listening and overcoming language barriers)
  • Foreign language skills
  • Global point of view, appreciation of diversity, tolerance, cultural awareness, and sensitivity to customs and cultural differences
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Motivation and initiative
  • Organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to identify, set, and achieve goals
  • General travel and navigational skills
  • Problem-solving and crisis-management skills
  • Patience
  • Independence, self-reliance, and responsibility
  • Perseverance
  • Inquisitiveness
  • Assertiveness

In preparing for job interviews, don’t forget to use your study abroad experiences as answers to typical interview questions such as:

  • “Tell me about how you have reacted in a stressful situation.”
  • “Provide an example of when you have had to think on your feet.”
  • “Are you willing to travel?”
