Orientation

As you arrive on campus, you will be told about the when, where, and why of our orientation meeting. The orientation meeting will be focusing on letting you get to know campus, Salem, and American life and culture in general. There are some practical matters we have to go through, with immigration and other visa information, insurance etc., in mind. Practical matters like:

  • How to get an Oregon ID card
  • Opening a bank account
  • Getting a social security number, so that you will be able to open your bank account
  • Get your Compass card/student ID, and Oregon State ID
  • Work will also be on the list of things to discuss when you get here

We, here at the office, will of course assist you in getting all of these things taken care of. The meeting will also be focusing on letting you get to know each other, through, fun, games, and parties. The orientation meeting itself will cover two and a half days, with time spent both on and off campus.

The orientation meeting will begin with a quick introduction of you, the new students, and a short little get-to-know-each-other-game. Then we will proceed on to the more practical details of getting you your Compass Cards and making sure they work, after which we we moveon to more parctical matters like campus safety, in and outside your rooms. An introduction to studying at WU will help prepare you to study at this university, American style, talking about educational differences between cultures, which is something you will experience first hand. Other things that will be brought up during orientation is visa matters, insurance information, and a little information on how to cope with culture shock and cultural adjustment.

All of this practical information will be mixed with fun games, and excursions to down town, a day trip to the caibin in the woods, little parties to allow you to get to know each other, trips to the movies or video evenings.

After the two orientation days this office will have, there will be an orientation week at your respective places of education (the law students at the law school, the business and management students at Atkinson, etc.). During this week there will be opportunities to go on little trips, and see other places, and get to know campus, and Salem a little better. For further details on the orientation schedule, contact the office.
