Passport

The federal government has announced a new policy that means travelers will soon have to bring passports to destinations that in the past haven't required them.

The "Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative" requires that citizens of the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, and Mexico have a passport or other accepted secure document to enter or re-enter United States.

The Department of Homeland Security new policies:

  • Passport required for all travel to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central America, and South America.
  • passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Mexico and Canada.

The Department of Homeland Security and the State Department plan to phase in the policy as follows:

  • December 31, 2007: Apply the requirement to all air, sea, and land border crossings.
