Biography

Richard B. Hagedorn was a member of the editorial board of the Willamette Law Review while a student at the Willamette University College of Law.

Prior to beginning his law school teaching career, Professor Hagedorn was an associate and, later, a partner with the law firm of Weatherford, Thompson, Horton and Jordan in Albany, Ore. He began his teaching career at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and taught there from 1977 to 1979. He was an associate professor at the Gonzaga University School of Law from 1979 to 1984. In 1982, he served as a visiting associate professor of law at the University of Oregon School of Law.

A member of the American Law Institute, Professor Hagedorn joined the Willamette University College of Law faculty in 1984. In 2003, he was appointed the Rosalind Van Winkle Melton Professor of Law, in recognition of his excellence in teaching and scholarship. He teaches Secured Transactions (UCC Art. 9), Payment Systems (UCC Arts. 3 and 4), Sales and Debtor-Creditor.

Professor Hagedorn has won teaching awards at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, at the Gonzaga University School of Law, and at the University of Oregon School of Law. At Willamette, he was voted Outstanding Law Professor of the Year in 1994, the first year the award was given. In 1996, he received the Willamette University United Methodist Exemplary Teaching Award.

Professor Hagedorn writes extensively in the field of commercial law, with several books to his credit, including the following:

  • Brady on Bank Checks (with H.J. Bailey), two volumes, A.S. Pratt & Sons Group, Rev. Ed. He also writes three supplements per year for Brady.
  • The Law of Debtors and Creditors (with Smith and Henderson), two volumes, Thomson-West, Rev. Ed. He also writes an annual supplement for this book.
  • Secured Transactions in a Nutshell (with H.J. Bailey), West Group, 4th Ed., 2000.
  • The Law of Promissory Notes, Warren, Gorham & Lamont, 1992.
