Welcome to the Willamette MBA!

School starts on August 19th! It is time to get started on your Willamette MBA experience! There are several tasks that need to be done to prepare for a successful fall semester.

I know you received this email later than most of the incoming students. I have extended the time for you. Please do these as soon as possible and no later than July 28th. If that is not enough time, just let me know at joneill@willamette.edu.

As you read the other materials, if you come upon due dates that have passed, just email me for assistance.


1. Set Up Your Willamette Network and Email Account Right Away

Willamette has partnered with Google Apps for Education to provide email.
* Go to https://secure.willamette.edu/newuser/
* Enter your student ID number. Your WU ID number is in the email you read to find the link to this web page.
* Click on continue
* Answer the general questions
* Read the user policy statement and follow the directions on screen.

You can also access your Willamette email through Google, Thunderbird, Outlook, Mac Mail, and others. For tips go to: willamette.edu/offices/wits/email

Managing your summer "MBA Do Lists" provides a great opportunity to learn to use the Google online calendar that comes with your Willamette network and email account. Check it out at willamette.edu/offices/wits/help/google/calendar. Most everyone at the Willamette MBA program (students, faculty and staff) use the Google calendar. It is easy to use, a great time management tool, and you can access it on your computer, tablet, kindle, phone, etc.

. Join the Incoming Student Facebook Page

We encourage you to join our Facebook group for the incoming class of 2014! The 2014 Facebook group also includes several current students and all members of our admission, recruitment and career management staff. You will have fun getting to know each other and you will have a large network of people to help you.

The group is a closed group (requires permission to join and all posts can only be seen by members) and the process to join is easy. If you already have a Facebook profile and you would like to join this group, follow instructions #1. If you don't yet have a Facebook profile, just follow the steps under #2.

After you join, be sure to introduce yourself on the "wall," so we can all start to get know each other better.

Social networking has great benefits for getting to know people and networking. As a person planning for an MBA level career, here are two important things to remember about your Facebook activities: #1) always represent your best professional self -- in words and pictures; and #2) employers for internships and career positions regularly check Facebook profiles when evaluating candidates.


3. Do the DiSC Inventory by Monday, July 28th

You will receive a very important email with the subject line: "Judy O'Neill has registered you for: DiSC Classic 2.0" The email will be sent to the email address you used throughout your application process. If you have not received this email within one day of receiving this "do list #1," email me at joneill@willamette.edu and let me know.

Your DiSC email will contain an access code that provides you free access to the DiSC inventory. Completing the DiSC inventory takes about 20 minutes.There are no right or wrong answers. Just read the questions and answer honestly. Please complete the DiSC as soon as possible and before 8:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Monday, July 14th.

Completing DiSC is fun and will provide insights into your preferred management and leadership styles. Understanding your DiSC results will help you become a better communicator, leader and manager. It is also a common assessment tool used by employers in the employee selection, assignment and promotion process.

Your DiSC results will be sent to Judy O'Neill. Judy and Professor Larry Ettner will use your DiSC results to help build your PACE teams. You will get to see your DiSC results after Compass Week. You will use the results in your PACE class and in the career exploration process of the Career Management program. Professor Ettner will explain what each DiSC profile means in your PACE class.


4. Do CareerLeader by Monday, July 28th

CareerLeader is available at http://www.careerleader.com/. CareerLeader is the top online MBA level career assessment tool. It will help you identify your career interests, career motivators, and skills. Our Career Management team will use your CareerLeader results to work with you when school starts.

Directions to access CareerLeader
* Go to: www.careerleader.com
* Click the "sign in" button on the top right corner of the page.
* Enter your email address in the email field. We authorized your participation with the email address you used at the time of your admission.
* Enter the registration key. Our registration key is as follows: atkinson-saxaphone
* You will then complete the CareerLeader registration process.
* After you complete the registration process, you will be taken to your user dashboard where you can begin using CareerLeader.

Completing CareerLeader will take about 30 minutes. There are no right or wrong answers. Just read the questions and answer honestly. When you have finished all three sections of CareerLeader, you will be able to see your results right away. Only you and our career management staff will have access to your online results. Please complete CareerLeader as soon as possible and before 8:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Monday, July 28th.


5. Acknowledge the Atkinson School Honor Code by Monday, July 28

The Atkinson School Honor Code sustains a culture of honor and trust and enriches the Willamette MBA experience for all members of the Atkinson School community. The Honor Code calls for all members of the Atkinson community to act in ways that encourage compliance with the code, whether it be in regard to their own actions or the actions of others. Thus, all members of the Atkinson community (students, faculty and staff) are required to acknowledge the principles of the Honor Code.

It is now time for each member of the incoming class of 2014 to formally acknowledge the principles of the Honor Code. Your acknowledgement of the Honor Code may take the form of "acknowledgement" or "acknowledgement with a commitment to abide and promote." The form of acknowledgement you choose is your personal and private choice. Either choice meets the requirement of acknowledging the Honor Code as the overarching standard of behavior at the Atkinson School.

To ensure that every member of the community has acknowledged the Honor Code, the dean's office receives notification when you have completed the acknowledgement. Although, the dean's office will know who has completed the process, no record is kept as to which of the two forms of acknowledgement you marked. Either choice meets the acknowledgement requirement.

Please go to https://agsm.willamette.edu/agsm/honorcode/ and login with your Willamette username and password. Your Willamette username is the part of your Willamette email address that precedes the @willamette.edu (be sure to use only lower case letters when inputting your username). Your password will be the password you established when you set up your Willamette email account. Read the Honor Code and click on one of the two acknowledgement responses. Please complete your acknowledgement of the Honor Code as soon as possible and before 8:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Monday, July 28th.

Submit Your Health History and Immunization Records

Oregon state law requires all new students to provide immunization and health records. Forms to be completed are available online in pdf format and are linked below. Be sure to complete the health history and immunization forms as soon as possible and send them to the Willamette University Bishop Wellness Center by August 1st. You can also bring the completed forms with you, but it is helpful if we have the forms before you arrive on campus.

If you need the measles immunization (MMR), you can get it on campus during Compass Week. The cost for the MMR vaccination is $62. Charges for vaccinations will be billed to your Willamette University student account.

[Note: If you have recently been enrolled in the Willamette University College of Law or College of Liberal Arts, you should update the health history form, but you do not need to resubmit the immunization and history forms.]


Planning for Compass Week
Compass Week runs from August 19th through August 22nd. Compass Week is required for all new students and will include important academic, professional and social activities. Different events and activities require different clothing. To help you plan your packing needs, here is your guide to appropriate dress for the activities of Compass Week.

  • Business Formal: Business attire typically means a jacket for both men and women. A tie for men, button-down shirt, matching slacks and dress shoes. For women, business attire would typically mean a skirt or slacks, jacket, button-down shirt or shell with clear or solid color nylons and dress shoes. For Compass Week, be sure your shoes are comfortable for walking.
  • Business Casual: Business casual typically means men and women can leave the jacket, tie and nylons at home. Men can wear polo or golf shirts and slacks. Women can wear slacks or skirt and a professional looking shirt. When dressing for "Business Casual," avoid sweat suits, jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes and flip-flops .

Laptop Requirement
All Willamette MBA students are required to have a laptop computer. In some classes you will use your laptop extensively; in others periodically or minimally. See current required laptop specifications


Learn About Our 2014-15 International Study Programs in India and Japan
Each semester, Willamette MBA students and alumni are invited to participate in a one-credit Global Study course taught by Professor Gary Knight that includes a one-week trip abroad. This fall semester, the focus of the course will be on India, with a trip planned to Delhi and Mumbai during the first week of January 2015. In the spring semester, the course will focus on Japan, with a trip planned to Tokyo for Spring Break 2015.
