Robert Trapp served as president of the National Parliamentary Debate Association from 1995-99, and serves on the board of directors for the Romanian Association for Debate Oratory and Rhetoric. He directs the International Debate Education Association (IDEA), headquartered at Willamette University. The association has offices in New York City and Amsterdam, and has served more than 70,000 youth in Europe, South America, Europe, China, East Asia, Africa and the Middle East. IDEA teaches debate skills to young people in emerging democracies, promoting peaceful conflict resolution and the free exchange of ideas.

Trapp's publications include Discovering the World Through Debate (third edition, 2005), Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric (third edition, 2002) and Readings in Contemporary Rhetoric (2002). He has published about 25 articles and given 75 presentations at academic conferences.
