Willamette cycling team hosts race around Capitol building
Collegiate and community bicyclists from across the Northwest braved rainy spring weather this past Saturday to race in the Capitol Cup Criterium, sponsored by the Willamette University cycling team.
A criterium is a short bicycle race on a confined course of less than a mile - a format that favors sprinting, bike handling and nerve. The Willamette students organized a route that looped racers around the Oregon State Capitol, including a stretch along the State Street side of campus.
In the morning, collegiate teams competed as part of the Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference. Afternoon races were open to the public.
Besides providing a fun weekend activity, the student organizers hoped to show their commitment to supporting athletic and cultural events in the community as well as their dedication to promoting sustainable forms of transportation.
