Jazz Night at Willamette features music of Björk and Kurt Elling
The Willamette Singers, the Willamette Jazz Collective and the Walker Quintet will perform at Willamette University's Jazz Night on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Willamette Singers, a vocal jazz group accompanied by piano, bass and drums, will present a mini-tribute to the music of Kurt Elling, including arrangements of "Minuano" and "In the Winelight."
The Walker Quintet and the Willamette Jazz Collective, the university's premiere instrumental jazz ensemble, will perform new jazz arrangements and re-imaginations of the music of Björk. They will be joined by special guest Dan Gailey, a saxophonist, composer and arranger. Songs will include "The Hunter" featuring soloist Kate Thurber '13, "Army of Me" with soloist Elizabeth Pullen '11, and "Desired Constellation" featuring soloist Hanna Barry '14.
Gailey is director of jazz studies and professor of music at the University of Kansas, and his compositions can be heard on numerous professional and college big band albums. He has performed with Kevin Mahogany, Eric Marienthal, Red Richards, Claude "Fiddler" Williams and many others, and he has appeared as a guest artist/clinician throughout the U.S., Canada and Sweden.
